Are you desperately clinging to those last warm rays of sunshine? It’s completely okay if you aren’t quite ready to accept that the time has come to dust off your scarves and jackets! But don’t slip straight from summer into mourning, just because flip flop season is coming to an end. This is the perfect time to refresh your mind and re-focus your life. Whether you’re back to work or gearing up for a new term at uni, keep calm and carry on with these 5 ways to embrace autumn!
1 - Get the boring things out of the way first
We all know the drill: Every day you lug yourself out of bed and take care of one of the ten things on your adult to-do list; rushing home, unloading the dishwasher, a quick drink with a friend followed by sorting laundry and paying bills. Don’t leave the tedious tasks until the last hours of the day. Get them out of the way early and enjoy as much daylight as you can. This won’t always be easy, but 9/10 times it pays off!
2 - Don’t succumb to social media
Of course you want to stay up to date on everything that is happening in insta-land. But all those apps, Facebook updates, filter-frenzies and other digital distractions will keep you from being able to appreciate the new season in its full beauty. Take walk in your neighbourhood as the leaves begin to fall and appreciate their colours. Pick up a fun project or new hobby that you can do indoors. Just because you’re wearing your sweatpants again, doesn't mean you have to throw yourself back into old habits of scrolling down your cousin's boyfriend’s Facebook profile for 45 minutes.
3 - Reward yourself with the good things in life
It's a lot more fun to get shit done when you have the right tools and accessories to make it happen. How about having another go at organising your life with a beautiful new notebook? Invest in a fun set of pens to go with it. And throw in some highlighters and washi tape if you want to outdo yourself by scrapbooking your lists and ideas in a creative way.
4 - Give life to your desk and breathe in the fresh air
It’s scientifically proven that plants make people happy. Keeping them on your desk will help create a positive working environment and can actually help reduce stress. Houseplants such as peace lilies not only look amazing, but also keep the air in the room clean. If your past-relationships with plants were more like a walk through Namibia’s Death Valley, you can also go green with some beautiful botany-themed prints. Bring the urban jungle to your walls!
5 - Create balance in your work-space
Hang up artwork that inspires and motivates you. If you barely find room in your calendar to do your laundry, choose calming prints to remind you to slow down from time to time. A crisp palm or a serene beach make for a picturesque view from your desk. If you feel like you’re in a bit of a slump, motivational typography can nudge you to take action.
One thing is certain: whether you’re too lazy or too busy, it's always good to tidy up the area where you work. Making space on your surfaces helps create space in your head. And that’s when magic starts to happen.
