About the artist

Heinrich Neuy

Nature is the ultimate.

Heinrich Neuy

Heinrich Neuy, born in 1911 in the Lower Rhine area of Germany, was a German painter, furniture designer and architect. His began his studies in carpentry, and moved onto the School of Applied Arts in Krefeld, before studying under the likes of Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, Josef Albers, Wassily Kandinsky and Lilly Reich at the world-famous Bauhaus in Dessau. During the Second World War he was captured and was interned as a prisoner of war in England, where he continued to paint, producing increasingly abstract pieces. He returned to carpentry after the war, and began exhibiting again in the 1960s. He returned to the Bauhaus in 1994, and became widely known as the “youngest Bauhaus artist”, and the last of the traditional school. He died in 2003, and in 2011 the Heinrich Neuy Bauhaus museum was opened in his native Steinfurt, featuring his work alongside those of his contemporaries. His work on JUNIQE dates from 1946 – 1996.
