Designed by Banksy. ‘Cleaning Lady’, also referred to as ‘Sweep it Under the Rug’ and ‘Sweeping it Under the Carpet’, appeared on the side of Hoxton Square’s WhiteCube Gallery in 2007. In typical Banksy style, the graffiti astutely interacts with its environment, portraying a maid ‘lifting up’ the edge of the wall to hide a pan full of floor sweepings. Could this be a political commentary on the way issues of wealth, class and employment were being dealt with at the time? Probably. After all, Banksy’s work is known for representing the cultural zeitgeist, and the anonymous artist certainly isn’t afraid of a bit of controversy.
