The Saale is a 413 km long tributary of the Elbe in Germany. It rises in the Fichtelgebirge mountains near Zell in Upper Franconia in Bavaria and flows northwards through Thuringia and Saxony-Anhalt. Important cities on the Saale include Hof, Jena, Naumburg, Weißenfels, Merseburg and Halle. The river crosses low mountain ranges, floodplain landscapes and wine-growing areas. It flows into the Elbe at Barby. The Saale is partly navigable and is used for power generation, leisure and tourism.
