Black Sabbath was formed in Birmingham, England in 1968, originally under the name Polka Tulk Blues Band, later shortened to Earth, and finally renamed Black Sabbath in 1969. The name “Black Sabbath” was inspired by a horror movie starring Boris Karloff, reflecting the band’s interest in dark, heavy themes, which set them apart from other rock acts of the time.
