"I attempt to understand and exemplify the idea of femininity through my paintings."
Jennifer Jaye Whitehead’s expressive watercolour and gouache portraiture deconstructs Western ideals of beauty. Through her painting process, Jaye grapples with the age-old link between beauty and goodness, questioning the essence of femininity and her own source of confidence as a woman. By fragmenting and highlighting facets of physically attractive women, the original representations of beauty become skewed. This new ambiguity of the altered woman’s personal identity prompts the viewer to question who she is and what makes her beautiful. Since graduating with a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Florida State University, Jaye’s work has been awarded, published and exhibited throughout New York.
