"My pictures make the invisible visible, look behind masks and grant access to the realm of dreams."
Catrin Welz-Stein combines historical paintings, curiosities and fairytale-like illustrations to create surreal and sensual images that are both familiar and strange at the same time. The German artist began her bizarre and ethereal collage experiments in 2009 and also utilises the possibilities of the digital world: with sophisticated Photoshop tricks, which she pulls out of her sleeve every day as a graphic designer, she lends her artistic assemblages an unearthly, dreamy effect.
