About the design
Selena Gomez was born to Ricardo Gomez and Mandy Teefey. Her mother, of Italian descent, was only 16 when Selena was born. Named after Tejano music star Selena Quintanilla, Gomez was raised by her single mother after her parents divorced when she was five. Life wasn’t always easy, but Selena says her mother’s determination deeply shaped her.
Her early interest in acting led her to audition for TV roles. She got her big break at age 10 on the children’s show Barney & Friends (2002–2004), where she met her close friend and fellow star Demi Lovato.
