"“Look carefully … There is no end to seeing … Everything is alive — shells, buildings, people, fish, mountains, trees … Water is alive. … Let life live through you.” Hokusai"
Japanese Ukiyo-e and Shin-Hanga prints, from serene landscapes by Kawase Hasui to the iconic waves of Hokusai and Hiroshige. Ukiyo-e, literally “pictures of the floating world,” is a Japanese art form that captures the beauty, elegance, and transience of everyday life. Originating in the Edo period, these woodblock prints and paintings depict landscapes, city scenes, theater, and the grace of women, blending realism with stylized design. Characterized by bold lines, harmonious color palettes, and meticulous attention to detail, Ukiyo-e celebrates the ephemeral moments of life—the shimmer of rain on a street, the curve of a mountain, the fleeting expression of a courtesan. Later, the Shin-Hanga movement revived this tradition with a modern sensibility, emphasizing light, mood, and atmosphere.
