The Balkan anemone (Anemone blanda) is a perennial, herbaceous plant from the buttercup family. It grows to a height of 10-15 cm and forms dense carpets. The palmately divided, deep green leaves resemble those of the wood anemone. The ray-shaped flowers appear from March to April in blue, pink or white with a golden yellow centre. It prefers sunny to semi-shady locations with well-drained, humus-rich soil. Winter-hardy, it propagates by rhizomes or self-seeding and is suitable for flower beds, rock gardens and woodland edges.
