The theme of witchcraft developed considerably in Goya's work. In addition to the six paintings of witchcraft he painted at the end of the 18th century for the cabinet of the Duchess of Osuna - including the famous El aquelarre - the Spanish painter Francisco de Goya dealt with the subject at two points: in the series of engravings entitled Los Caprichos (the first edition dates from 1799 but was immediately withdrawn because Goya was denounced to the Spanish Inquisition, owing to his patent hostility towards the court), and in the series Los Caprichos (The Caprichos), a series of engravings entitled Los Caprichos (the first edition dates from 1799 but was immediately withdrawn because Goya was denounced to the Spanish Inquisition, owing to his patent hostility towards the court).
