Collage Posters
Piece by piece, layer after layer—collage is a realm of the visual arts in which mediums and forms are stripped from their contextual spheres and reassembled to create a new whole. Springing to life on an array of different surfaces, collage prints bring an exciting sense of depth to our catalogue of artworks.
A brief history of collage
Collage art emerged from the modernist Cubism movement at the beginning of the 20th century. The term 'collage'—rooted in the French term 'papiers collés', meaning 'glued paper'— was coined by the founding fathers of the form, Pablo Picasso and Georges Braques. By incorperating fragments of materials such as wallpaper and cloth into their works, the duo challenged traditional methods of drawing and painting with unconventional results.
In time, creatives the world over expanded experiments with collage to all kinds of previously unthinkable surfaces and mediums. As a result, every piece in our diverse collection of collage posters is as remarkable as it is unique.
Picturesque patchworks
A woman seeking solitude towers above a long-stretching shore. A middle-aged man escapes life, fleeing to the tranquil daydream of a fluffy cloud. A lost, winding city shimmers through a landscape of jagged peaks. Observing each design closely, it quickly becomes evident that the interaction between humans and nature in collages is scintillatingly surreal.
Shifting our gaze towards the animal kingdom we can't help but notice the omnipresence of personification in our fauna-inspired collage prints. While wild cats, brown bears and strapping stags dress to impress, winged creatures flutter across the collection in kaleidoscopes and droves.
Going, going, digital
Thanks to technology, collage prints are no longer confined to the chains of their original backdrops. The evolution of digital design not only gave way to the physical printing of collage posters, but it also forever expanded artists' means to work with the materials at hand.
Take fashion collages, for example. In Gretchen Roehrs's designs, photographs of artfully chopped fruits and vegetables are superimposed on digital illustrations of the female form. The result is an epicurean twist on haute couture. Collage art, at its finest.
